In recent decades, there has been increasing recognition of the importance of schooling. Education is rightly seen as vital to the wellbeing and future prospects of New Zealand children and society. According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), there is now robust evidence that human capital is a key determinant of economic growth, and that increased levels of human capital are associated with a wide range of non-economic benefits such as improved health and prosperity. Human capital can play an important role in the development of the knowledge economy by lifting productivity and equipping New Zealanders with the skills required to compete on a global scale.
